Juvederm® and Restylane®: 2 Surprising Facts You Should Know

I was shocked that the number of dermal filler patients who bruised in my office was at least 5 times the number I predicted. Bruising creates considerable difficulty for my patients so now I ask every patient if they bruise and use OcuMend to solve this important problem”. Amy R.  BSN RN CPSN CANS

leaky blood vessel

Primary bruising is due to cutting of the blood vessel which leaks directly into the subcutaneous. Cannulas improve primary bruising.

OcuMend dramatically reduces or prevents bruising due to dermal fillers, therefore,  we ask nearly every office how many patients bruise. After talking to hundreds of offices over 2 years, we had determined that the average bruising rate was around 30% for most offices.  This changed when we started to look at the package inserts.

Eleven FDA dermal filler studies found in Juvederm® and Restylane® package inserts report:

  • Average of 66% bruising in 1774 patients
  • Based upon these studies, there is a 99.5% probability that clinicians have greater than  30% bruising.

How is it possible that there is such a difference between the perception and the studies?

Secondary bruising occurs due to the blood vessel sending out macrophages, mast cells and other blood elements to heal damaged tissue.

The same studies showed that patients reported 3X the bruising that physicians reported.  Most practices assess bruising based upon the bleeding in the office; however, most bruising does not develop until the day after injection.    This “secondary bruising” is generally missed by practitioners.  However, patients and their friends know they bruise.  A national  survey of 397 dermal filler patients reported that 81% had bruised at least once.

Why should you care?

Patients who bruise come back less frequently because they have to plan time to stay home for the weekend.  Can you imagine trying to find a weekend that you don’t have something for the kids or a social event?

Ask every patient if they bruise and offer them OcuMend as a solution.  They will be grateful and come in more often because they don’t have to plan around the bruising thus decreasing your marketing costs and increasing patient load.  Plus patients want their problems acknowledged; be a leader by offering a  bruising solution.

Be well,
